Morné Luus

About

I am a multidisciplinary designer on a quiet but purposeful quest: to bring beauty and simplicity to a complex world.

My journey has taken me across continents — from South Africa to Dublin, London, Hong Kong, and Athens. Living and working in these culturally rich cities has shaped my perspective in countless ways. They taught me to see design not as a single language, but as a multitude of dialects — each culture interpreting space, colour, form, and rhythm through its own unique lens. These experiences continue to inspire and inform my creative decisions every day.

I believe creativity should tell a story — one that connects, resonates, and moves people. Whether through visual identity, digital design, or spatial aesthetics, I see myself as a formulator of narratives. My work spans media & communications, social media strategy, web design, branding, graphic design, and interior design — and at the heart of each project is a clear intention: to tell the right story, simply, beautifully and memorably.

I’m also a believer in collaboration. Great design happens when ideas are shared, challenged, and refined. I thrive in dynamic teams that practice open, egalitarian design thinking, and I bring to every project a delivery-focused mindset, balanced with a self-motivated and thoughtful approach.

My portfolio reflects this multidisciplinary path. Client commissions have ranged from the creation of brand identities, marketing ephemera, infographics, and videos to immersive interior design that extends a brand into physical space. Each project is an opportunity to bring vision into form — and form into feeling.

Outside of work, I’m an avid traveller and a passionate art lover. These pursuits are not just hobbies — they are sources of inspiration and fuel for my imagination. They remind me to keep exploring, questioning, and creating with intention.

EXPERIENCE

My career has taken a winding — and incredibly enriching — path through three main industries: Food & Beverage, Information Technology, and Design. Each has shaped the way I approach creativity, communication, and problem-solving today.

Food & Beverage

My love for food and hospitality started with a passion for cooking and baking — and evolved into years of hands-on experience working in restaurants across South Africa, Ireland, the UK, and Hong Kong.
I’ve worked both front- and back-of-house, which gave me a real understanding of customer service, high-pressure environments, and the powerful connection people have with food. It also deeply influenced my visual appreciation of presentation, atmosphere, and experience — something I’ve carried into my design work.

Information Technology

I spent over 15 years in IT, beginning with support roles in South Africa and later joining Dell in Dublin, where I worked on the server support desk. After that, I moved to London and spent 12 years at InPS, a company that develops clinical software for UK GP practices. I started in senior support and later joined the Data Services team, where I wrote SQL queries to mine and interpret data from secure medical databases.

This work sharpened my problem-solving skills and gave me a deep understanding of software systems and data logic.

In 2014, I completed a Web Development course with General Assembly in Hong Kong, which introduced me to WordPress, PHP, CSS, and HTML. While I don’t call myself a developer, I’m very comfortable navigating WordPress environments and have a strong grasp of its structure and customisation options. I now use it as the foundation for the websites I design and build for clients — always focused on clarity, brand alignment, and usability.

Design

Design is where everything comes together for me — storytelling, communication, and structure. I hold an Honours Degree in Design and Innovation, where I learned to apply design thinking across product development, prototyping, and user experience. My final project involved creating sustainable, tool-free furniture — a piece you can view here.

SMT Shipping

In 2022, I led the full rebrand of SMT Shipping, a global dry bulk transportation company. The project involved:

  • A refreshed visual identity

  • A new website (built and maintained by me in WordPress)

  • A brand rollout across global offices and vessels

  • Design of marketing materials, merchandise, and press assets

You can view the site at: www.smtshipping.com

Following the rebrand, I was appointed Media, Communications & Design Lead, where I now oversee everything from social media content to internal comms and our bi-annual magazine (designed, written, and produced entirely in-house). I also edit video content and ensure brand consistency across every touchpoint — digital, physical, and everything in between.
