Interior Design

Interior Design has been a particular passion. I have been creating interiors for myself and friends for many years. I now have the opportunity to work for clients as the interior designer at Geraghty Taylor Architects, London Bridge.

Interior design can make a brand cohesive and interactive: Clients can experience the brand's identity and vision in space. The narrative of an interior is very important, as it will communicate the story of the business or home.

A particular favourite is utilising natural materials and practising the Japanese worldview of Wabi-Sabi. Here the imperfection of nature is celebrated in material use, asymmetry and austere simplicity.

Personally, art plays an important part in an interior and I practice this in all my designs for interiors. Once space has been furnished with art, it communicates in a bold and culturally specific way whilst it also lends a sophisticated edge. Further, it is a personal passion of mine which I enhanced by making History of Art my major at university.

Below are examples of some interior schemes that I have worked on.

Art and Design have been going hand in hand for centuries. These two disciplines have been inseparable for good reason - art lends a cultural and intellectual dimension to design. It communicates ideas, conveys emotion and enhances creative beauty. Adding art to interiors elevates space to resonate on a more personal and cultural level.

Art has been a personal passion of mine, which caused me to study History of Art as a major of my university degree. The knowledge and understanding I gained from my studies have provided me with a greater passion to include it in my design. Whether it is a design influenced by an artist or movement or adding appropriate art collections to interiors, art now sits central to my creative endeavours.

Below are some examples of adding art to interiors, a creative photography project and collaborations with artists.

Monochromatic Mass Transit Railway

This concept was conceived by my admiration of the architecture and design of Roland Paoletti: Principal Architect of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway stations in the 1970s.

Paoletti used colour as an economical way to create the identity and visual interest of MTR stations. Apart from this, the individually coloured stations assisted the many illiterate people in Hong Kong in the 1970s in identifying stations. Using mosaic tiles, these colours create a visual interest in the mundane practicality of architecture.

I started collecting images focusing on colour and forms that these tiles create. Travelling across many stations, I started amassing a huge collection of images, which I wanted to display in cohesion. Monochromatic Mass Transit Railway is a collection of these images that continually changes the order it is displayed in, making the viewer aware of the cultural importance of the colouring of the station. Further, it highlights the simple interaction of architectural practicality with colour and aesthetics.

Art Collection

As an avid lover, I love placing art at the centre of the design. Whether that means that I derive inspiration from art or utilise it within interior design. I believe that adding art to any space brings another level of depth to the design. You can now elevate the design to an intellectual dimension whilst adding to the aesthetic value.

Art also provides an opportunity to make space resonate with an area. Using local art, or culturally appropriate art can ground a space. It also provides with opportunities to involve local artists into a project. This will bring a local flavour to any project and will resonate with local clients, residents or communities.

My Repulse Bay Project explores some art collection that I assisted in.
