French Indochina – Morne Luus Design

French Indochina is a concept proposal for a Vietnamese French restaurant in Hong Kong.

The client brief was to create an interior for a mid-priced Vietnamese restaurant with strong French influence. The restaurant caters to a younger professional clientele that expects not only quality food but also a strong design aesthetic that can be considered as Instagram friendly.

The resultant proposal was influenced by traditional French Vietnamese colonial designs. Instead of recreating another traditional looking space, the idea was to take the traditional aesthetic and abstract the design to a simpler and more contemporary design. Utilising a simple palette of colours containing sage greens and light pinks, the space will be calm yet exude modernity. Aspects of traditional French bistros reminds of both the Vietnamese and French cultural styles that are combined here.

Below are some of the narrative that makes up the proposal for this project. Starting with selections of images that display traditional design, then following onto material selections, look and feel images and finally, some sketches that portray certain viewpoints from the floorplan.

Design Influences

The design was influenced by traditional colonial styles that is found within South East Asia. These images shows examples of mentioned style.

Look & Feel

These images portray the look and feel for the space. Taking cues from traditional design in French bistros and colonial styles, but abstracting this into a the modern equivalent in terms of minimalism and colour.

Materials and colour

This mood board showcases the materials and colours that is suggested for the scheme. Natural materials and delicate colours will create a calm yet contemporary space.

Restaurant View and Material Use

These images portrays a particular view within the restaurant and also shows the material and furniture application within the restaurant. Rattan screens provides a natural colour and also opportunities to shield areas for privacy and also COVID friendly social distancing.

Window View and Material Use

The restaurant has huge floor to ceiling windows. Creating seating along the window will allow punters a view of in-and-outside of the restaurant. Using rattan surrounds behind upholstered seating creates privacy for the diners whilst still allowing a view.

Bar View and Material Use

This view of the bar area shows how this space is demarcated with a dusty pink colour that complements the sage green. Using a tambour wainscoting around the restaurant creates interest and texture. The bar will be covered in Terrazzo which creates further texture and a sense of luxury.
