Logo-2_Enso_circle_COVER_BRANDING

Karen Cox is an award-winning photographer from Ireland. She captures street life and nature around the world in atmospheric and haunting detail. Shooting in-camera mostly in black and white, Karen never edits her photos after capture. Her keen eye in portraying human condition in different situations was what attracted me to this collaboration and project.

We needed to brand her product and the inspiration for the logo emblem was the Japanese Buddhist practice of creating Enso circles. Perfect hand-drawn circles are made using ink in a meditative process. The perfect circles created in a single movement reminded me of how Karen captures images in a single movement. Further, the shape of the circle resembles that of a camera lens, the tool that captures the images. The logotype was kept minimal to resemble the austere quality of Karen's work.

The project is phased into brand creation, creating a portfolio book and a website. The portfolio book and website will portray Karen's work in a subdued way, which will let the work take centre stage. Careful placement of text and decoration complements the work. Chapters are introduced with classic Roman numerals and descriptions are kept almost invisible in order not to interfere with the minimal style.

Further phases include creating photography books which will showcase a narrative or series of images.

Below are some of the narrative that formed part of the project. From the creation of the brand to some examples of the portfolio book.
